Wall-to-wall glass and a material palette informed by local vernacular define Zen House, a 33-square-metre micro home on stilts in Austria, completed by Czech studio Jan Tyrpekl. The glass micro home sits on a wooden platform made from glued-laminated timber, which is also utilised for the roof structure.

An oversized thatched roof shelters the geometric concrete forms of this house in Vietnam, which has been completed by local architecture studio Kientruc O. Named Thu House, the 877-square-metre dwelling in Ho Chi Minh City is designed for a client who wanted a home that would evoke their childhood in the countryside.

Indian studio Kiron Cheerla Architecture has completed Pott House, a home in Hyderabad topped by a lantern-like roof that draws light and natural ventilation into its interiors. At night, lights inside glow outwards through the roof to create a lantern-like effect. A smaller first floor occupies the southern half of the home.

The five-bedroom family home is constructed from wood and defined by its origami-like, wood-clad roof, which pays homage to local buildings and agricultural structures in nearby villages. We want the building to feel agricultural, hence the gabled ends, but also nod to the variety of domestic roof pitches found in the local area."

Located in Coimbatore, India , the home was designed to straddle the urban sites and farmland that sit on either side of it, in a bold geometric style intended to offer a modern twist on traditional farmhouse design. Underneath the home's pitched upper roof, an accent wall coated in brickwork adds an earthy feel to the facade.

The brief emerged out of two significant post-lockdown changes for the family: the arrival of another child and a shift to permanently working from home. The grey brick cheeks of the outrigger, which blend with the roof color, follow the same stepping logic, creating a tapered and textured effect.
