The accounts that I've included here are all spectacularly good at "architectural" sketches - which is an important distinction to make. I follow a lot of sketching accounts, probably half of which are anime-related. You can find all sorts so tips, techniques, and inspiration from a myriad of sketching sources but I wanted to focus on people who actually drew the sort of sketches that I want to draw - buildings and street scenes.

I spend most of my day in a digital work environment and I’ll often find myself tweaking the smallest of details just because I can. Digital space is without limitation, yet creativity thrives on constraints. It’s the boundaries that we’re forced to work within that shape our work. There’s no question digital tools are an integral part of how we realize our architecture today and in the 25 years I’ve been practicing, those tools have changed and improved the way I work significantly.

Stand-alone recreation halls were a little more common in the late 1800s and early 1900s for the Church. They were later integrated into the meetinghouse building. This stand-alone recreation hall serves the historic Pioneer Stake on the west side of Salt Lake City. It was later renamed the Harold B. Lee Recreation Hall because of his role in its history.

Originally completed in 1925, Chicago’s Union Station was designated a landmark in 2002 and listed by AIA Illinois as one of the 200 Illinois Great Places. The restoration of the station’s Great Hall sought to maximize the reuse of existing materials and infrastructure, preserve the historic integrity of prior generations, and significantly reduce its energy use.

Income inequality and gender neutrality are two hot-button issues that are being debated on many fronts, including school districts around the country. Case in point is Ulysses S. Grant High School, a historic secondary school in the Hollywood district of Northeast Portland, Ore. The 10-acre campus, which serves around 1,800 students, recently underwent a $158 million two-year-long modernization that included a three-story addition and extensive renovation.

Springfield, Mass., the site of America’s first armory, served as the center of U.S. military munitions manufacturing and research until 1968, when the historic site and buildings were deeded to Springfield Technical Community College. One of those buildings is now the STCC’s Campus Center, which unites student services covering enrollment, academic advising, student life, and a learning commons in a 170-year-old, 764-foot-long structure.

Following a two month decline in demand for design services, architecture billings got a bounce in October, according to a new report released today from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score in October is 52.0, up from the September score of 49.7. This score reflects an increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings).

GreenSpace Holdings LLC is focused on constructing “cost-reducing self-storage solutions with an emphasis on environmental conservatism.” The company’s most recent project is a 181,000 square-foot facility in Houston and it will be a part of the CubeSmart franchise. TMS Contractors LLC of Houston handled the design and construction of the project, incorporating reclaimed shipping containers encased in an attractive exterior – insulated metal panels from Metl-Span.

A proposal by Sacramento Municipal Utility District could undercut California’s mandate requiring solar panels on almost every new home. The utility is asking state regulators to allow its customers to get power from solar farms instead of installing their own panels. Home builders have warned that the state’s solar mandate will drive up already high housing costs—adding almost $10,000 to the price.

A survey by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) indicates strong support for architecture as a licensed profession. The survey found that 89% of voters agree it is important for architects to be licensed. The survey collected responses from nearly 1,000 U.S. voters on topics regarding public perceptions of regulation, licensing, and the architecture profession.

The City of Cambridge, Mass., and electric utility Eversource have teamed up on a building energy retrofit program to spur more energy retrofits. The program targets buildings that are more than 25,000 sf or 50 units for energy-saving improvements. The program “will proactively connect building owners and facility managers to energy efficiency services, incentives, and technical support,” according to a news release.

Canada’s Parliamentary complex, in Ottawa, is undergoing a massive 10-year restoration that includes the Centre Block, which houses the government’s two parliamentary chambers. A project team led by Diamond Schmitt Architects and KWC Architects has converted the city’s 1912 train station into a stately interim home for one of those chambers, the Senate.
