After many delays over the course of many months (they were supposed to be planted last fall), the trees we selected to shade the Keys House have finally arrived! Trees have been a part of the landscape of this house since it was new; the various species — and their arrangements — have changed considerably over the past 135 years. A few ancient elms have survived at the eastern end of the small yard surrounding the house, but for decades the bulk of the yard has had no shade.

Most of the individual buildings in Tokyo are ugly. They are utilitarian, designed to house people affordably, survive earthquakes, and protect inhabitants from the weather. Most could be described as brutalist with concrete or tile exteriors, relatively small windows, and minimal decoration. They aren’t precious or beautiful yet they do what buildings are supposed to do.

We often talk about sustainability strategies that help to minimize environmental impact and slow the effects of climate change. Designing for resilience is equally important now that the earth’s temperature has started to rise, and abnormal climate events are becoming the norm. This post addresses how climate modeling can inform design strategies to respond to climate change, rather than design strategies to prevent climate change.

A new study from Carnegie Mellon University found that LEED-certified federal buildings are not using less energy than non-certified federal buildings. The finding may be due to trade-offs in how their energy score is developed with energy use being just one of many attributes examined by the LEED program. In some cases, owners and developers may trade off energy savings for other goals to improve design and comfort in buildings.
