Jaynes Corp., a premier general contracting firm with locations in New Mexico and Colorado, eschewed traditional methods and instead used state-of-the-art 3D scanning technology to document the location of rebar in tilt-up panels at the Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sandia Casino and Resort. The project included a 28,000-sq-ft, two-story office complex adjacent to the main casino.

There are many things I do during a typical day – designing “stuff” is just one very small portion – but I still consider myself a designer more so than a project architect. Since I work at a smallish firm, everyone wears many hats and nobody has just one task or label. To be considered a designer just means you need to think about the design of everything – and I mean everything.

“Ascent” is the apt name of what would be the tallest mass-timber building in the Western Hemisphere, a 21-story 410,000-sf mixed-use tower that would be located in downtown Milwaukee, Wis. A Building Team that includes the engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti, Korb + Associates Architects, and the developer New Land Enterprises has unveiled the design of Ascent, which is currently in its planning stages but could start construction by the fall of 2019.

With a new project on the horizon for Canada’s largest telecom, local structural engineering firm, Glotman-Simpson had an idea: The use of long-span composite steel decking could be ideal for such a large-scale project, contributing to an open, column-free design. So, they brought the idea to the attention of the architecture firm, Henriquez Partners.

Nonresidential construction spending in New York City is projected to reach $39 billion in 2018, a nearly 66% increase over the previous year. After months of negotiation between residential builders and the plumbers union, Philadelphia is poised to allow the use of plastic pipes in high-rise residential construction. A memorandum of understanding hammered out by the Plumbing Advisory Board will be incorporated into the new building code next year. The City of Brotherly Love is one of only six major U.S. cities that still require the use of metal pipes in such projects.
