Last week I spent a frigid couple of days in the far northern part of Wisconsin with Poul Ober , an architectural photographer, so that we could get professional images captured of the modern cabin I wrapped up in this area earlier this year. Ultimately I think we will end up taking two trips … not because it’s fun, but because this cabin has two personalities – one where the cabin is covered in a blanket of snow, and one where it is not.

Hawaii’s first net-zero public school

Kihei High School on Maui is slated to become the Hawaii Department of Education’s (HIDOE) first net-zero school and Maui’s first Hawaii-Collaborative for High Performance Schools (HI-CHPS) project. The school will serve grades 9 through 12 and be located on more than 77 acres of undeveloped land. The campus will comprise multiple buildings and approximately 215,000-sf.

Flying drones while inebriated now illegal in New Jersey

Flying a drone after having too many drinks is now illegal in New Jersey. Governor Chris Christie signed a law this month that prohibits flying a drone with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or higher, the same level as for driving a vehicle. Operating a drone while under the influence of drugs has also been banned. Anybody caught violating the law faces up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both.

The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) concluded the year in positive terrain, with the December reading capping off three straight months of growth in design billings. . The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the December ABI score was 52.9, down from a score of 55.0 in the previous month.
