There is a request that I receive a few times a week that I thought I would finally talk about in an effort to shed some light on a fairly taboo subject. Those requests typically start off something like this: “I have already designed my house but since I am not an architect, I don’t know how to create the technical drawings I would need to give to a contractor.

If all goes as planned, the first phase of Riverfront Square, a seven-phase 5-million-sf redevelopment on 11.8 acres in Newark, N.J., could break ground next Spring. The master plan for Riverfront Square—located on the site where the Newark Bears minor league baseball team once played—calls for up to 1,800 residential apartments, a 240-key 185,000-sf hotel and conference center, a 30,000-sf arts and cultural space, and up to 2 million sf of Class A office space.

A housing shortage that one mayor called “an emergency” has spurred a regional initiative in the Boston area to build more residential units. The mayors of 15 cities and towns close to the Bay State capitol pledged to sharply accelerate the pace of home construction. The goal is to add 185,000 new homes by 2030 in the 15 communities.

The University of Toronto recently completed construction of a new addition to its School of Architecture. The top floor of the new Daniels Building features an expansive 16,000-square-foot open space designed to function as a studio and study hall. The space features no interior walls or structural columns. Towering above the massive space is a very contemporary drywall ceiling designed to replicate wings.

The CitizenM Bowery, a 21-story, 100,000 sf hotel, is the tallest modular hotel in the United States. The DeSimone Consulting Engineers-designed building comprises 300 modular guestrooms, a rooftop bar and lounge, a bistro-style restaurant, coworking space on the ground level, and a 4,000 sf plaza.
