Announced in a revised site plan approved by the City of Austin on April 29, Apple is adding a 75,500-sf, six-story hotel to its billion-dollar corporate campus that is currently under construction in Northwest Austin. The project comes as a bit of a surprise as the plans for the hotel were not included in the original site plans filed in December 2018, according to Culturemap Austin. .

More than half (53%) of multifamily developer respondents reported construction delays in the jurisdictions where they operate, according to the third edition of the National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) COVID-19 Construction Survey. Of this group, 85% reported delays in permitting due to COVID-19, up from 77% in round two (conducted April 9-14) and 76% in the initial survey (conducted March 27-April 1).

All too often, relics of maritime history are lost before they’re even recognized as the treasures they are. Luckily, the Thelma C—a 36 foot salmon seine vessel—has found a permanent home at the Kodiak Maritime Museum in Kodiak, Alaska. The outdoor pavilion exhibit site, designed by Barnes Architecture and constructed by contractor Friend Construction using Star Building Systems’ pre-engineered elements, was completed in December 2018. .

Cross-laminated timber, or CLT , is touted as a more sustainable option for building construction than concrete and steel. But is it really? The answer is complicated. CLT is intended to replace concrete and steel whose production accounts for about 13% of global carbon dioxide emissions. Wood in CLT panels pulled CO2 from the atmosphere, and that carbon should remain locked up as long as the building stands.
