Venturing Out of the Studio

30X40 Design Workshop

My longing for adventure has been building as the winter here drags on into March. As a salve for cabin fever and to satisfy my wanderlust I’ve been taking micro-excursions venturing out of the studio. This past Sunday, Laura and I headed off-island and eastward toward the Canadian border in search of new scenery and any hint of spring Maine could offer.

Q&A With Regan Billingsley

DC By Design

We’re coming up on a year of shutdown now, where we’ve all been forced to reckon with the walls that surround us day in and day out. I remember seeing the first news story — on March 13 last year, the day our lives officially retreated home — where I inferred that the design industry might actually do OK in the ensuing pandemic nightmare.

Why Your Architecture Practice Website Matters Now—More Than Ever

EntreArchitect

Last year I studied 163 architecture websites (crazy, I know!). I studied them because I was tired of hearing architects say: “My website doesn’t matter… I get all my projects from referrals or word-of-mouth”. But in today’s Google-driven, economic-uncertain, pandemic-plagued world, nothing could be further from the truth. Architecture practice websites do matter.

AMEP: Plumbing Line "Label" with a Leader

The Architect's Desktop

A question came up the other day, concerning Plumbing Lines and the "Label Curves" that AutoCAD MEP provides to label those Plumbing Lines. The request was to be able to be able to label a short Plumbing Line - one shorter than the label itself - by offsetting the label and connecting the label back to the Plumbing Line with a leader. The results of some quick research suggested that Label Curves do not have a leader option, when offset from the Plumbing Line that they are labeling.

MIT Day Versus Night

Visualizing Architecture

A long time ago, I put together a day to night illustration for my Philly Bridge project. Back then, I had a hard time deciding what kind of scene lighting to go with so I just did both and ended up creating a tutorial around how you could shift an image from daytime to night all in Photoshop. For the MIT project, I again was struggling to decide what time of day to go with so I decided to go with a “Day versus Night” series of images again.

Future- which future? Rarely was the desire to know the future bigger than amidst this pandemic. But the future remains shrouded in doubt and uncertainty, the future of cities included.
