(1) The gleaming new Corvallis Museum , designed by Allied Works Architecture and constructed by Gerding Bulders for the Benton County Historical Society (BCHS), proves to have been well worth the wait.

The Duluth, Minn.-based general contractor Kraus-Anderson has been busy this summer, having finished the construction and/or remodeling of several education, public safety, and healthcare projects in Wisconsin and Minnesota. If anyone was to search about social housing and its evolution through the years, they would find news and information about the legal history of social housing, the various legislations that were passed to create and modify social housing and how this legislation has evolved alongside a changing society. However, less information exists about how social housing has evolved through the past 100 years in terms of architecture, materials and design.

The Josiah Quincy Upper School (JQUS), a 650-student public school, is set to rise on a one-acre site in Boston’s dense Chinatown neighborhood. The six-story, 178,000-sf building will house grades 6 through 12. The HMFH-designed facility will feature healthy spaces that support student success and wellbeing. A building permit was issued for the adaptive reuse of the former Pepsi Bottling facility on NE Sandy Blvd, a part of the Pop Blocks development (formerly known as the Pepsi Blocks). A building permit for the adjacent apartment building is currently in “Approved to Issue” status. Every week, the Bureau of Development Services publishes lists of Early Assistance applications, Land Use Reviews and Building Permits processed in the previous week.

‘Go’ in St Neots Although I like to think I am good at spotting small, unregarded buildings, sometimes my attention is drawn irresistibly to the large and showy structures that stand out, whether in a rural landscape or in a town. Pulling into a car park in St Neots recently, there was one such building that I couldn’t miss, because its massive tower with corbelled top and striking tiled roof dominated the skyline in that part of town.

Here comes the Sun, or, Odd things in churches (14) People who look carefully at old buildings will know all about the Sun Fire Office. It was an insurance company, founded in 1710, and it’s still going in a different form. It’s familiar to devotees of old houses because the company’s clients used to fix a metal plaque bearing the company name and symbol (the Sun in splendour, naturally) to the fronts of their houses.

The International Code Council (ICC) is aiming to convince more government officials to adopt the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code—the latest version of the code. The ICC has developed a toolkit describing the benefits of the 2021 IECC, including energy savings of 9.4% and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions of 8.7%. ICC will step up outreach efforts to promote the newest code version.

The new Special Forces Monument, designed to reflect the honor those who served in the 24th Special tactics Squadron, is set to be unveiled at Pope Airfield next to Fort Bragg, N.C. on Sept. 11. The design, which is being led by international design firm RATIO, will incorporate a 36,000-pound piece of steel from the Twin Tower. The monument will be made of wood beams, concrete, steel, and 80,000 pounds of laser etched granite with photos and text.

Last Tuesday, the Northeast Community Propel Academy, a K-8 school with the capacity for 1,660 students, opened In Philadelphia. The 180,000-sf building was financed and constructed through a public-private partnership between the School District of Philadelphia and Gilbane Development Company, which provided turnkey development for the new school.

City-owned land in Boston’s booming Seaport district is vulnerable to flooding, a condition that will only worsen with climate-induced sea-level rise. To address this threat, city officials have instituted developer fees as a condition to build in the area to help finance a seawall and other protective infrastructure. Cost estimates to protect the 191-acre area are as high as $124 million.
