I am almost always amazed, amused, and even envious of many of my fellow architects and their sense of fashion or even lack thereof. I love it when groups of architects join together as it is a parade of styles and outfits that become a feast for my eyes.

A Better Built Environment

For the past 20 years the world progressively became smaller. I lived and worked in cities around the world from Montreal to Bangkok, Shanghai to Eugene, Berlin to Portland and now New York City. In each location I also traveled frequently for both work and pleasure. Exotic destinations were just a couple fights away. I could wake up in Portland, hop on a plane, watch a few movies and land in Tokyo.

Claude Nicolas Ledoux has always been one of my favorite architects but finding information about him is a struggle. The few books written on him are hard to find and incredibly expensive. The little that is left of his built-work is in France of course so not easy for me to get to. Recently Ashley Hicks had a 2-part talk about Ledoux which you can watch on his Instagram TV (link HERE ) showing a few projects I wasn't familiar with.

The big one for me is: what will be the new normal in the post-COVID-19 world and to what extent will the way we interact with the built environment change? Unfortunately, this is a question that can’t be answered precisely right now and that is really tough for me as a practical, fact-based, to-the-point engineer.

A new residential tower, dubbed Alcove, set to rise at 900 Church Street in Nashville will be the first residential building adjacent to the 17-acre Nashville Yards development. Designed by Goettsch Partners, the new 34-story, 416-foot-tall tower will feature 356 units and total more than 375,800 sf. The building is designed as a series of stacked, shifted cubes organized in pairs on four levels.
