More than 65,000 construction, design jobs may be cut if sequestration takes place

About $2 billion worth of construction and design projects would be eliminated if scheduled federal budget cuts, referred to as sequestration, take effect on Jan. 2, 2013 ,according to a report by the American Institute of Architects. An estimated 66,500 jobs from the design and construction industry would be lost. The report identifies 48 budget accounts funding design, construction, and rehabilitation of buildings that would be cut under sequestration. read more.

Nashville providing incentives for green roofs

Nashville, Tenn., is promoting the installation of green roofs through a measure providing a $10 reduction in a property's sewer fees for every square foot of vegetative roof. Green roofs can capture about 55% of rainfall and prevent that water from reaching the stormwater system, according to the city. MIT models show roofs' capacity for solar energy in Cambridge, Mass.

A new mapping tool from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Boston design firm can calculate rooftops' capacity for solar energy. The mapping tool has been used to show which of the 17,000 rooftops in Cambridge, Mass., are best suited for PVs by determining the amount of direct sunlight they receive. Investigators look into crane severely damaged by Sandy in Manhattan

Investigators are examining a construction crane collapse atop a $1.5 billion luxury high-rise in midtown Manhattan due to high winds during Hurricane Sandy.
