I’m currently in Chicago celebrating the 50th birthday of a good friend of mine. In fact, there are four of us here and we all know each other from our time together from the University of Texas School of Architecture. Evidence presented this weekend would suggest that we are all still about 24 years old despite the realities that we are all considerably older.

Unlike most professions, architects are fairly accustomed to standing up in front of a group of people and speaking … but that doesn’t mean they like it ( or even worse ) – that they are any good at doing it. The concern going through almost everyone’s head before they get up in front of a group is that they will look stupid, sound stupid, or generally come across as someone who shouldn’t be talking about whatever it is they are talking about.

This past week I had the pleasure of touring this year's Kips Bay Showhouse , the most venerated of showhouses, where the best of the best get together to raise funds for after-school programs in New York City through what may best be described as a celebration of design. I toured the house from the top down, always a good idea, and so these pictures are in that order.

Reading is one of life’s best pleasures. And an expression of self-love. Finding time to devour a book can be quite challenging. But finding a good book can be even trickier. Occasionally, I’ve come across really good books. Books about architecture, travel and history – which are my personal favourites.

When I started architecture school in 1986, the first two core classes of Kent State University’s curriculum in those days were Theory of Architecture I and II. Second year greeted us with Theory III and IV. Most classes had Roman numerals IV, V, […].

Today we are talking about Architectural Bucket lists. Everyone knows what a bucket list is – things you want to do or achieve in your life. For an architect, this could be visiting Therme Vals in Switzerland by Peter Zumthor, or if this was prior to 1969, maybe it would be smoking cigars with Mies van der Rohe. [Note: If you are reading this via email, you will have to click here to access the on-site audio player] Items that an architect would put on their Architectural Bucket list could cov

In this age of computer-aided everything (CAD, sketch-up, photoshop, etc) it's refreshing to know there are those in the architectural community who still draw by hand. No computer model, no matter how realistic, can ever replace the warmth and depth of information imparted by hand rendering. More than just an art form, it's a communication technique!

Uber. Amazon. AirBnB. WeWork. Common. These are some of the prominent brands and business platforms that have come to define the “shared” or “gig” economy in the U.S. and beyond. They are reflections of and responses to societal and behavioral changes in the ways that people want to live, work, and play. Their success is linked inextricably to the ubiquity of mobile tools that connect users to the Internet that, as one AEC firm put it, “is the circulation system of the shared economy.”.
