Embracing the WELL Building Standard: The next step in green

BD+C

Did you turn off the lamp on your desk today before you left the office? Did you remember to reach down and turn off the power strip your computer was plugged into? When you got home from work, did you walk through the house turning off all the lights the kids had left on, and did you reach over and turn off the running water while they were brushing their teeth?

Cabin Detail – Steel and Walnut Bench

Life of an Architect

In any project, there are a handful of design moments that help establish the personality of that entire project. For the cabin project that I have been working on for the past 2+ years, one of those moments came to life during the design process of a pair of benches that sit outside guest bedrooms. This was the original concept sketch that I created for a pair benches – you can see from the date on that sketch that I drew this in August of 2015.

The thing about Neel Reid is.I'm not sure.

Architecture Tourist

The "thing about Neel Reid" for me is that his houses make me feel great, welcome, comfortable, human. Though he died at age 40 in 1926 J. Neel Reid remains Atlanta's most esteemed architect. It's a bit unfair as design is collaborative, yet they don't call them Hentz, Reid & Adler's houses, they call them Neel Reid's. As architect Greg Walker elegantly put it to me just last week: "Neel Reid was a stud.

Dutch building incorporates 22 emojis into its façade

BD+C

Emojis tend to elicit fairly strong reactions from people. Many people love to use the small ideograms while texting and emailing like modern day hieroglyphics. Others experience a visceral hatred any time they see one of the little buggers. This dichotomy is best exemplified via a teaser trailer for The Emoji Movie. On one hand, the movie studio felt secure enough in the general public’s love of emojis to invest money in a feature film.

I managed to get along but I was acutely aware of my lack of practical knowledge and I have been trying to make up for it over the last 20+ years.
