Zaha Hadid Architects has won a competition for the design of a new harborfront district in the Chinese city of Sanya. Located on the southern tip of Hainan island, the area attracts 80 million tourists each year for its forests and beaches, a demand that is driving the development of the new harbor district.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has debuted a new concrete alternative material as part of its participation in the fifth Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB 5) , which is taking place now through February 11th at multiple locations citywide. The firm’s Bio-Blocks technology is being presented as a replacement for traditional Concrete Masonry Units (or CMUs) and can reduce emissions on a project by up to 8% if used at scale.

All-electric building projects have increased by more than 130% since 2020, according to new data from the American Institute of Architects. The figure is one of several findings from the latest AIA By The Numbers report which provides a detailed analysis of the energy performance of architecture and design firm signatories to the AIA 2030 Commitment. 428 companies reported data as part of the survey, with 23,276 projects reported from 107 countries.

MVRDV has announced the completion of their Van Boven Architecten co-designed Gymnasium Beekvliet renovation project in the Netherlands. The alma mater of both Winy Maas and Theobert van Boven was once the nation’s leading catholic seminary and was later used as an internment camp for political prisoners of the occupying Nazi regime during Worl War II before being modernized into a new grammar school in the early 1970s.

Central Saint Martins graduate Luke Talbot has created a portable charger that can be hooked up to rental bikes to allow people experiencing homelessness to charge their phones for free. On display as part of the Design Transforms exhibition at CSM during London Design Festival, MyPowerbank was designed to slot onto the chain of any Santander bicycle – rentable bikes provided by Transport for London – parked in one of the 800 docking stations across the capital.

Dutch studio OMA has unveiled visuals of the geometric Dhaka Tower, its first project in Bangladesh , which "expresses the aspirations of a dynamic nation". The 150-metre-high skyscraper will house offices and be located on the shore of Hatirjheel Lake in a new commercial district at the edge of Tejgaon, Dhaka. Dhaka Tower was designed for developer Shaka Holdings by OMA partner Iyad Alsaka and will be the studio's first-ever project in the South Asian country.
