Mexican architecture studio Lucio Muniain has created Casa HMZ, a brutalist house with raw board-formed concrete walls in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Completed in January 2023, the 8,600-square foot (800-square metre) house – known as Casa HMZ – was designed as a sculpture that you can live in, and follows Mexican architect Luis Barragán 's approach of creating moments of mystery and discovery in addition to the traditional living spaces.

The strength and availability of bamboo give it the potential to be as dominant in construction as concrete and steel, argues Atelier One engineer Chris Matthews in this interview. "This idea that we have a sheet of rigid, extremely polished buildings, built from all kinds of steel and concrete, it has to change," Matthews told Dezeen. "Bamboo has a real part to play as a low-carbon material, and it needs to be part of the toolkit that we have moving forward," he continued.

The process of using bacteria to colour textiles has been brought to a commercial scale by British company Colorifix, which hopes to cut the fashion industry's use of toxic chemical dyes. Shortlisted for a 2023 Dezeen Award , Colorifix has brought several pigments to market since its founding in 2016 including indigos, mauves, pastels and beiges – all made by bacteria that was genetically engineered to produce certain colour-making enzymes.

Belgian architecture studios Mamout and Stéphanie Willocx have refurbished a 1960s home in Hoeilaart, stripping away previous extensions to celebrate the "spirit and quality" of its original design. Located in a wooded area, the Belgian home was originally designed in 1962 for a group of musicians. It comprises a brick and glass pavilion and a concrete blockwork garage, which step down its gently sloping site.

A brick, steel and timber structure is left exposed in this office interior in Sydney , which local firm Cox Architecture has revamped to house its own studio. London gallery Themes & Variations has opened an exhibition of furniture , lighting and sculpture by designer Tom Dixon that spans his over 40-year career, which he says is "like having a visual psychotherapy session". The Tom Dixon: Metalhead exhibition features 52 pieces, including the designer's 1986 welded metal chairs that were exhibited at Themes & Variations in 1987 in the early stages of his design career.
