David Chipperfield has big plans for the expansion of Miami’s Design District

A new project from this year’s Pritzker Prize laureate, David Chipperfield , was announced recently as the architect of a new western expansion plan for the Design District in Miami. Local developer Craig Robbins made the news public in earlier December via Instagram. The plan will reportedly include a high-end luxury hotel, a residential component, and an undisclosed total of retail spaces.

News on the revival of the once-lost Luna Luna arts amusement park appeared in the Los Angeles Times earlier this month after the attraction was relegated to storage for over thirty years following its 1987 debut in Hamburg, Germany. The memorable park was re-staged this month in the city thanks to rap impresario Drake’s entertainment venture DreamCrew, which purchased the unassembled lot from the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation at an undisclosed price.

A team from Drexel University has published their research into a self-healing system for concrete. The team, operating in the University’s College of Engineering, embedded bacteria in their concrete system that, when activated by water, can repair cracks in the concrete. Named ‘BioFiber,’ the Drexel system sees a polymer fiber encased in a bacteria-laden hydrogel and a protective, damage-responsive shell.
