It was named the Black & White Building as it replaces an earlier building on the site, a Victorian brick warehouse with a timber interior that had been painted black and white. The design process began with an on-site picnic, where a discussion focused more on the natural elements of the site rather than the building. This shift in the bars, and the siting of the house, also conceals the view of the water upon arrival to the site. That conversation inspired the ethic of the project to come.

Curtains and curtain tracks were fitted to the perforated aluminium ceiling to informally divide and zone workspaces, providing its users and employees with privacy.
