About two weeks ago, I received an intriguing email from Jeff Speck, the author of two of the most influential books on urban planning in the past two decades: Suburban Nation (2010; co-authored by Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk) and Walkable City (2012; reissued in 2022 with new material).

This last week I was in Chicago for the American Institute of Architects National Convention – I arrived around 1:00am Wednesday morning (my first seminar was 6 hours later) and I left Sunday at 9:00am to drive to northern Wisconsin to meet with some new clients. The convention, as always, was great.

You have a good career, you do right by your clients, you provide a service that is respected and rewarded. I think you could make a good argument that these benefits far outweigh the “direct-market” approach, when it comes to developing and maintaining relationships with clients.
