Photo is by Hufton & Crow Battersea Power Station masterplan (2008) Viñoly was responsible for outlining the masterplan for the redevelopment of the Battersea Power Station in London, parts of which are now complete. Inside are double-height exhibition spaces and offices for the art gallery's conservation department.

The studios performed a sensitive renovation and restoration that also resulted in the rebuilding of the missing northwest wing and southeast bay – both of which were destroyed by bombing during the second world war and had remained derelict since. A temporary exhibition space was topped with a saw-tooth roof.

Since 2011 Gordon Smith has studied the symbiotic relationship between humans and the natural world through the lens of urban architectural development. The masterplan is an example of deep respect for the revival of nature in urban environments while honoring local culture and amplifying a promise of prosperity for the future.

The restored building now enables views from above and within, revealing rooftop terraces, exhibition and event spaces, an auditorium and an enfilade of arches that diverge into galleries. A ramp from this level creates a direct pathway to a park just north of the site. It is the fruition of cultural diversity.”

The store has lain empty since 2011, but its fully-glazed semi-circular turrets and art deco panelled interiors remain in excellent condition. Once embellished with murals, a chequerboard-pattern cladding and striped shop awnings, subsequent restorations have diluted some of the original decorative details.
