SOM revisited the building in 2001 to completely restore its facade. Now, after nearly 70 years of operation, some of the building’s other original elements are showing their age and need restoration. Today – two decades after the facade work – SOM is returning to this modernist icon to complete its restoration.

It was established in 2013 in place of the Manser Medal, which was set up in 2001. RIBA president Muyiwa Oki described the 2024 contenders as "exemplars in sensitive restoration, climate-conscious design and ingenious urban placemaking". The only project outside England is Plas Hendy Stable Block by Studio Brassica Architects.

Hilmer & Sattler and Albrecht took the recent restoration work, which won the competition in 1998. Yet, major restoration work has not been done but some emergent repairs. After being partly destroyed by bombs during WWII, there was barely any action of restoration taken until the competition in the 1990s. Pergamonmuseum.

While Corporate Memphis is bland and conformist, the work of the Memphis group was radical and anarchistic, a deliberate challenge not only to Modernism, but to the very notion of good taste. What Sottsass and his allies in the Memphis Group believed in was restoring joy and fun to architecture and design.
